Educations Not Equal ≠

Teaching pre-COVID, during COVID, and post-COVID made me reflect on how blind I was at the beginning of my teaching career. Pre-COVID I thought that everything was wonderful I got to wake up every day and teach kids art and nothing else mattered until COVID hit the world like a medieval atomic bomb. That’s when I saw administrators, school board members, politicians, parents, and some teachers show their true colors. These people made it seem like they were in education for the students but they were only there to collect unnecessary funds, line their own pockets, and enhance their own lives.

Educations Not Equal is a series of works based on how I saw and see students of color, especially in underserved areas being treated by a system that wasn’t created for them to succeed. The public education system ignores our students, their needs, their situations, and their dreams. And it’s not getting better. With pieces titled “Absent Parent”, “Our Educations Not Equal”, “Academic Anxiety”, and “ I Gotta Make It Out”. Through these works, I hope to make a lot of people truly think about what our education system was, is, and could be for all students.
