Educations Not Equal

Charcoal | Pastel Portrait Series | 2022-2024

Educations Not Equal is a deeply personal body of work that emerged from my experience teaching through the COVID-19 pandemic. As a Black art educator navigating the abrupt shift to remote learning, I witnessed firsthand the inequities in access, engagement, and support that widened educational divides—particularly for Black and Brown children. What began as reflective sketches and journaling evolved into a full visual narrative that challenges viewers to confront the layered realities of systemic injustice in education.

This collection uses mixed media, bold color, and layered symbolism to honor the resilience of students while exposing the cracks in our systems. Of the ten works created in this series, six have been acquired by My Brother’s Keeper, a national initiative launched by President Obama to address persistent opportunity gaps for young men of color—an affirmation of the work’s power and relevance.
